ADÃO DA FONSECA - Engenheiros Consultores
In July 2006, António Adão da Fonseca established ADÃO DA FONSECA – ENGENHEIROS CONSULTORES, Lda. (AdF) to provide specialised services in civil engineering projects.
These services primarily focus on the design of bridges and special structures, the coordination of multidisciplinary engineering projects, and the preparation of expert reports, engineering valuations, and special studies. AdF has been active in Portugal as well as in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, Serbia, Denmark, Georgia, Kuwait, Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Nigeria, the United States of America, India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Angola, Brazil, and other countries.
In this project, AdF is the leader of WP2 (Reference structural systems and joint typologies). Additionally, AdF is participating in WP3 (Optimised modular structural grid), as well as in the preparation of the design guidelines in WP9 (Technical design guidelines).

Diploma in Civil Engineering at University of Porto (FEUP), in 1971. Doctor in Structural Engineering at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, in 1980.
Professor of “Design of Bridges and Special Structures” at FEUP. Invited Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Autonomous University of Lisbon. Member of the Advisory Board of the Portuguese Institute for Architectonic Heritage (IPPAR) in 2004 and 2005. President of ECCE – European Council of Civil Engineers in the quadrennium 1998-2002. President of the Civil Engineering National College of “Ordem dos Engenheiros” in the triennium 1995-1998. Fellow of “Ordem dos Engenheiros”. Specialist in Structures by “Ordem dos Engenheiros”.
His professional career was initiated in 1972 as Designer of Structures, together with his lecturing at FEUP. He establishes AFA – Adão da Fonseca & Associados – Consultores de Engenharia, Lda. in November 1985, in which he was Chairman of the Board of Administration until December 2005 and Chief Designer of bridges and special structures. Between 1992 and 2002 he took leading responsibilities in “Ordem dos Engenheiros” and in ECCE European Council of Civil Engineers. In July 2006, he established ADÃO DA FONSECA – Engenheiros Consultores, Lda (AdF) for the design of Bridges and Special Structures and to provide servicesof consulting and specialized advice in the Civil Engineering field.
Earned his diploma in Civil Engineering, specialising in Structures, from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto (FEUP) in 1994.
Since then, he has established a distinguished career as a consultant and designer of bridges and building structures, amassing over 25 years of experience.
In academia, he served as an Invited Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho until 2016, where he lectured on Bridges, Steel and Composite Structures, and Concrete Structures II. He also held the role of Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto until 2014, teaching Bridges. Currently, he is an Invited Associate Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, where he lectures on prestressed concrete and composite bridges.
Renato’s professional career began in 1994 at AFA – Adão da Fonseca e Associados.
In December 2006, Renato became a Partner and Project Manager at the newly formed consultancy ADÃO DA FONSECA – Engenheiros Consultores, Lda (AdF), where he continues to contribute to innovative and multidisciplinary structural projects.
Earned a Civil Engineering Diploma from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto, Portugal, in 2003, and has collaborated with Prof. António Adão da Fonseca since graduation.
In the early years of his career, he worked at AFA – Adão da Fonseca e Associados, before joining the newly established company ADÃO DA FONSECA – Engenheiros Consultores, Lda (AdF) in January 2007 as a Project Director. Since then, he has dedicated a significant part of his career to the design of bridges and buildings for both public and private entities, playing an active and highly responsible role in several unique projects.
In 2019, he became a Partner in AdF. He is recognised as a Fellow and Specialist in Structural Engineering by the “Ordem dos Engenheiros” of Portugal. Additionally, he served as an Invited Professor at the University of Coimbra from 2018 to 2020.
