High-strength steel connections for
circular construction

Spreading circular economy practices through

Development of standardized and optimized modular structural grid system

For the easy reuse of existing steel members, independently of their exact dimensions, by enabling the possibility of very large tolerances.

Catalogue of efficient, adaptable, demountable, and reusable joints

Allowing to connect reused open-section beams to open-section/tubular columns and splices.

Extension of design rules & BIM framework

That extends the IFC classes and incorporates all the necessary descriptors for reusable steel connections to facilitate interoperability throughout the life-cycle process.

The Project

Mission & Objectives

Inspired by the high-priority societal demand for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

We want to promote the circular economy in the steel construction industry, thus leading to significant environmental savings through life cycle thinking and digitalization, while maintaining the competitiveness of the European Economy.

Working towards Circularity
in Steel construction

Steel reuse is economically beneficial, as in the reuse process the material keeps its inherent added value and produces practically no waste, resulting in a clean economy and considerably less pollution.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Research Fund for Coal and Steel programme under grant agreement Nº 101112300

CONNECT4C will be brought to success by a complementary and experienced European team

Embracing the synergies between academic and industrial partners, whereby the knowledge acquired through comprehensive technical studies will be shared to different stakeholders (society, practitioners, manufacturers, construction companies, technical committees) following a systematic dissemination plan.

Resources

& insights

To facilitate widespread application of the proposed system, CONNECT4C adheres by design to open-science philosophy.
